Joseph ETHINGTON

Joseph Ethington was married to Polly Pines by 5 Feb 1787.  On this date she was referred to by her Brother (in his will) as Polly Etherton. Family tradition says Joseph had three wives, she would be the third and last.

Ivory Ethington:
(This information given to Betty Ann Bowles by her grandfather Ivory Ethington on 30 Jan 1963):  "The first Ethington is supposed to have come from Scotland.  His name is not known, but his son was J.Ethington.  Both J. Ethington and his father made shoes for the soldiers.  The father of J. Ethington measured the person's foot and made the shoes to fit and be comfortable.  In fact, he was said to have been the best shoemaker in Virginia and one of this customers was none other than George Washington.

Little is known about J. Ethington other than he was a shoemaker. J. Ethington was 45 years old when his father died, and he married sometime shortly after his father's death.  John Demaree (a son of Mattie Ethington and John Demaree and also a grandson of James Ethington and Eleanor Clark) said J. Ethington married twice and had the following children:

By one marriage, J. Ethington had Fielding Ethington
By another marriage, J. Ethington had:
     1.  William Ethington, born about 1773 in Culpeper Co VA
     2.  Joe Ethington, who lived to be 106 years old
     3.  Rachet Ethington, a daughter, who married Mr. Baker

A Joseph Ethington (Eatherton) is found in the 1787 census of Spotsylvania Co Virginia.

Nancy ETHINGTON

By order of the Spottsylvania Court, Nancy was taken from Joseph and given to the Pendleton family to raise.  See Spotsylvania Co. Va deeds, book M (GS film # 034073)

2 Mar 1790 Spotsylvania Co Va Deed Book M page 238:
Nancy Atherton, daughter of Joseph Atherton aged 12 (note: ?) do put and bind apprentice to John Pendleton to serve him till she arrives at the full age of 18 - she to be taught, clothed, etc. This done by the overseer of the poor.

In Sep 1989, the delinquent property tax book for Spots Co Va was inspected by Harold Ethington at the Virginia State Library.  The tax book was for the years 1775/76, and contained referrences to Joseph and James Ethington for those years.  These referrences were tied to James Peterson, a probable brother in law for James Ethington.  In the back of the tax book, on what had been unused pages, someone had set down some personal accounts.  The years were 1836/37, and the account detailed the seamstress services of one Nancy Ethington.  She is shown as receiving payments for alterations etc.  This Nancy is not identified further, but she could be one of two different Nancy Ethington's know at this date.

The first Nancy would be Nancy Crawford Ethington-4, widow of James Ethington (who died 13 Jul 1818). Nancy was active in Spots County throughout her life, applying for additional bounty land as late as 1871.  There is no indication if she was a seamstress.

The second Nancy is Nancy Ethington-2677, daughter of Joseph Ethington.  This Nancy was taken from her father Joseph in 1790 at the age of 12 to be raised by the Pendleton family.  I have found no record of her marriage in Spots Co Va., so it could be possible that she was still known in 1836 with the surname Ethington.  Again, there is no indication that this Nancy was ever a seamstress, but it seems a likely occupation for an older, unmarried single woman, if in fact that is the case.

A second possible reference to this Nancy is found in the 1830 Spots Co Va census.  A mention of this reference is made by Donald R. Eatherton in his correspondence, but no page or dwelling number is given.  Need to inspect this for age etc.

Rachet ETHINGTON

See notes for Father, J. Ethington.  See also Ivory Ethington comments on Ethington family history.

James David WYLIE

Information from Betty Ann Bowles in about 1980:
"Malinda Martha Ethington was married to a WYLIE, not Willey, according to Nannie Belle Wylie Lawson obit."

I assume from this that Nannie Belle was a daughter of Wyley, and will be added now.

Louise ETHINGTON

Louisa is listed in the 1880 Henry Co Ky census page 139 B dw 90 as being born in 1864.  She is noted as unable to write.

Letter from Alvin and Daphne Ethington to HE dated about 1979:
"The first husband of Louise Ethington was George Self.  She had a son, George Self (Jr.) by him.  Her children now live in Louisville and we could get an address if necessary."

MARY'S FATHER was the son of WILLIAM MARSHALL, who was the Uncle of CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN MARSHALL of the US Supreme Court.

JAMES                age  4 (b. 1846  M KY

Q: Could the 14 year gap between WILLIAM and MARTIN indicate children were born who died in infancy?

29 Oct 1857

JOSEPH deeded 180 acres, a whole track belonging to [his father] WILLIAM ETHINGTON dec'd, to [his brother] JAMES ETHINGTON.

[This would be JOSEPH'S inheritance from his father.]

The Deed Indicates JOSEPH was married to MARGARET at this time. Since MARGARET HILL would only be 16 in 1857 and was married to a MR. GILL in 1868, when her son, HENRY GILL was born, this would mean JOSEPH was married to another woman named MARGARET.

*** Records need to be rechecked to verify his wife's name in the document.

1860

Henry Co Ky Census not found

1870

Henry Co Ky Census:

JOSEPH ETHINGTON - age 65  (b. 1805) - M - Farmer - b. VA
MARY               age 64  (b. 1806) - F - b. KY

? Abt 1870-1871

? MARY MARSHALL ETHINGTON died - age abt  64-65

? Abt 1872

? JOSEPH ETHINGTON, 67, married (2) MARY PARKER (b. abt 1835 - age abt 37)

It's suspected MARY PARKER was in her late 30's, nearing the end of her childbearing years when they married.  Figuring she was about 43 when NEWTON was born in 1878 her year of birth would be about 1835.

(Dec 1991) - HE reports: No marriage record has been found for JOSEPH ETHINGTON and MARY PARKER / PARKET in Henry County. Oldham, Shelby and Scott Counties were also checked from 1869-1873 with no results.

*** Need to check Counties of Trimble - Carroll and Gallatin.  Franklin Co does not have any marriage records for these dates (in SLC)

(Jan 1992) - HE reports: Searched Ky Counties of Carroll - Trimble and Jefferson for marriage of JOSEPH and _______ PARKER. Nothing found.

NOTE:

EMMA ARMSTRONG shows MISS PARKER marrying JOSEPH ETHINGTON JR.

This is certainly a possibility - and more likely, considering JOSEPH SR'S age when the children were born.  This would mean the children listed are actually JOSEPH'S grandchildren - and mistakenly shown as his children in the 1880 census.

Nothing more is known about JOSEPH'S son, JOSEPH A / O ETHINGTON except he was born about 1846, which would make him about 29 when LILY B. was born in 1875.

*** Additional research needs to be done on JOSEPH A / O ETHINGTON to see if he married and when he died.

Another supporting factor to this theory is that the 1880 census shows the parents of the children are BOTH born in KENTUCKY while JOSEPH (age 75) is shown in the same census as b. in VIRGINIA.

IF JOSEPH SR. AND MARY PARKER ARE THE PARENTS OF THE CHILDREN SHOWN IN THE 1880 CENSUS THE FOLLOWING TIME TABLE SHOWS IT COULD BE POSSIBLE.... BUT KEEP IN MIND HE WOULD BE 73 -74 WHEN THE LAST CHILD WAS BORN !!!

abt 1873

JOSEPH ETHINGTON was 68 and (2) MARY PARKER abt 38 when their (?) 1st child: BEATRICE ETHINGTON was b. (nothing is known about her)

1875

JOSEPH ETHINGTON was 70 and (2) MARY PARKER was abt 40
When their 1st or 2nd child LILY B. ETHINGTON was b. abt 1873

*** NOTE: Could LILY B. actually be LILY BEATRICE?  If so JOSEPH & (2) MARY PARKER may have married about 1874, when he was 69 and she was abt 39.

1877

JOSEPH ETHINGTON was 72 and (2) MARY PARKER was abt 42 when they had their 2nd or 3rd child: LYDIA M. ETHINGTON.

1878

JOSEPH ETHINGTON was 73 and (2) MARY PARKER was abt 43 when they had their 3rd or 4th child: NEWTON J. ETHINGTON.

MARY PARKER ETHINGTON died soon after NEWTON'S birth.

1879

Gestville Dist - Henry Co Tax Records show:

ETHINGTON - JOSEPH has 25 acres valued $250, neighbor is MOSES MOSS
ETINGTON - MARSHALL
ETHINGTON - JOSEPH M., has 2 children aged 2-20 - value of land $100

This record shows 2 JOSEPH ETHINGTON'S with property of different value.

JOSEPH M. has 2 children.  By this time LILY B. - LYDIA M. - and NEWTON J. ETHINGTON were born - aged 1-4. (NEWTON could be an infant, if he was b. at the end of 1878.

19 Dec 1879

Henry Co Ky Deed Book 38 page 464:

JOSEPH ETHINGTON SR - J.M. ETHINGTON JR. [the same as JOSEPH M. shown on tax records below] and MARANDA, his wife, sell to OBADIAH JOHNSTON for $100 1 house and 1 lot of 1 acre of land located in Gistville on South East corner of 2nd and Broadway Street Block 290.

Signed:

JOSEPH (X) ETHINGTON
J.M. ETHINGTON
MARANDA (X) ETHINGTON

NOTE: By this time JOSEPH'S younget son, NEWTON J. ETHINGTON, would be between 1-2 years old (depending which month he was born.)  Presuming he is actually the son of JOSEPH M. - and his mother, MARY PARKER, died soon after his birth it would be easy to assume the above MARANDA is JOSEPH M.'S 2nd wife.

IF JOSEPH M. is the father of "BEATRICE" - LILY B - LYDIA M - & NEWTON J. why did he leave them with his 74 year old father and stepmother in 1880 - and only take 2 of them back in 1881?  Did the youngest children die?
