Notes from Milda F. Croswait:
My father, Silas Shelton, was burned int he American Car and Foundry Company plant at Madison Illinois. He had worked at the Mt. Vernon Car Company since 1929 but because of shortage in material was laid off. He left home on MOnday morning for Madison, Illinoisand found employment. He worked only one night and had just started th second whenthere was an explosion. He died in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Granite City (near St. Louis) at 11:45 pm. He was a rivetoer and was burned when a portable oil pressure furnace with which he was heating rivets exploded, spraying him with flaming oil. My uncle Henry took mother, my siste, and me to the hospital. MOther had prayed all the way that his face would not be burned. When we saw him, he was burned everywhere but his face. His body was taken to Keenes Funeral HOme and then brought to his home at 308 NOrth 6th St. Mt Vernon Illinois where it remained until taken to the Nazarene Church for the funeral at 2:00 pm on January 2, 1942.
