Name:  Joe Carter
DOB:  20 May 1920
County:  Woodford
Mother:  Lula Etherington
Volume:  56
Certificate:  27987
Volumn Year:  1920

Since Lula and Joseph Carter were married in 1919, this child would be their first, and was named after his father.  It appears that this child died, and we see a son born 1926 also named Joseph Carter Jr.  Will apply death date of "bef 1926" accordingly.

e-mail from Cheryl He  17 Mar 2009:
I found the Death Certificate for the baby on Ancestry in the Kentucky Death records, 1852-1953.  Here's the info.

Name: Stillborn
Death Date: 20 May 1920
Death Location: Woodford

You can probably access the rest from that. My grandmother said the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. She believes there is a headstone for him in Versailles.  Do you have any contacts there that can visit the graves?  I'm concerned, too, because apparently there was some horrible vandalism done in the cemetery in February.  See if you can access this link on Find A Grave…
There's also several article on the web about it.

Talk to you soon

Family information provided by Cheryl previous to this discovery showed a son, James Woodrow Carter, born to Joseph and Lula Carter on 20 May 1920.  This conflicted with information found above showing a son "Joseph" Carter born that same day.  Putting this all together, we can assume the following:

 1.  A son was born 20 May to Joseph and Lula Carter.  They named him "Joseph", and a birth certificate was issued under that name.

 2.  This son "Joseph" died the same day, and the death certificate showed only the name "stillborn".  It seems likely that the parents changed the name of this boy from "Joseph" to James Woodrow Carter, thereby reserving the name "Joseph" for use later in carrying on father Joseph Carter's name.

Will show the name of this infant as James Woodrow Carter in this record.
