Subject: correction to your Ethington web site

Greetings,
I found your web site while looking up info on my great great grandfather Hiram McKay and his wife Elizabeth Ethington - both died in KS.

Their son, my great grandfather, was:

Benjamin Franklin MCKAY

Living in Independence, KS in 1897.

Transferred to Provo Temple from Bountiful Temple.  Dec 1997.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You have his wife listed as:

Margaret MCKINSEY
with this correction:

Per Jane Shaw, name is Margaret McKinley.

HOWEVER, as often done, her last name is misspelled!
Her name was Margaret McKinlay - daughter of Peter McKinlay and Agnes Frew Miller. They were all from Glasgow, Scotland - as well as Margaret's siblings - Agnes, Jeannie, and Peter.

Benjamin (known as BF Sr) and Margaret's daughter Agnes Elizabeth McKay was married to William Quincy Copeland. Agnes (known as Elizabeth because her  mother and aunt were "Agnes") was my grandmother.

Photos of them appear in my book (you don't have to buy, just click Search, on the book on amazon.com -  "An American Genealogy: The Copeland Family of Montgomery County Kansas," as well as on my family tree on ancestry.com - and on www.findagrave.com with their grave information.

I have yet to find any photos of Hiram and Elizabeth McKay!

Subject: Re: additional info about Etherton/Simms background

hi Harold -
How wonderful to hear from you and I'm glad that my info helps. I noticed that Walter Scott had put down names that did NOT appear on some McKay/Etherton/Ethington family trees. Since it was his grandmother - I assume he is correct. I also like the family story of Mr. Simms disowning his daughter. Now, on Walter's chart, it says JC Simms. But on most family trees, I see William Simms or Sim. Do you know which is correct? Also, the daughter is named Fannie Simms/Sim. But on the charts, it is Elizabeth Simms/Sim. I know Fannie, like Polly, was often a nickname used in many families.

I've written 2 books - one on the Copelands and the other on the Finneys. My next book planned is on the McKay/McKinlay line, and now I will be able to include info about the Etherton/Ethington background. Do you know when and why the change of the name from Ethington to Etherton? Also do you have any photos of my branch - it may be too early - but there might be tintypes.

Walter Scott McKay's 95 year old daughter Dorothy McKay Schwartz just died in Feb. Her daughter is not very open to sharing and I assume she has most of the photos - sigh.... My own grandmother Agnes Elizabeth McKay Copeland (Walter's sister) moved to Oregon and died unexpectedly in 1933. Unfortunately, the woman I refer to as my evil aunt Margaret (married to Agnes' eldest son, my Uncle Don) hoarded all the McKay/Copeland memorabilia. Don died, and Margaret remarried, taking the memorabilia in Agnes' trunk. Years later my cousin Don Jr, saw the trunk rotting in Margaret's yard when he went to visit. So I have been building all my family info by scratch.

Fortunately I have found and built relationships with hundreds of descendants - and now my 1st cousins once removed or 2nd cousins - and then found their stories and hundreds of their photos. I create Pictorial genealogies because I believe photos bring the family alive.

So even with your genealogy info, if I can track down descendants, I can probably get photos and make that information come alive too!

Thank you for taking the time to contact me and for sharing information.

Best regards,

Cousette,

Thank you so much for this information.  I will add it to what have, correct as stated, and look forward to what is coming.
Also, I would be happy to send you all I have on the Joseph Ethington family, but snail mail might better for that.
Unless, you could receive a gedcom file.

Let me know.  And thanks again.  Much appreciated.

hi again,
I sent you info that my great grandparents were Benjamin Franklin McKay and Margaret McKinlay (you have McKinsey and McKinley on your web site). I have the complete genealogy and photos.

I also have a wonderful family tree drawn in the 1920s by my grandmother's brother - Walter Scott McKay. On it, he wrote down a history of JC Simms disinheriting his daughter Fannie for marrying a blacksmith - Joseph Etherton. I thought you might like to include it on your web site.

I am attaching a photo of that part of the family tree.
