Ethington Family

Notes

Irene Arrie ETHINGTON

Married several times.
 -  Estelle.

Peter G. Ethington probate shows Irene signing as "Irene Easties".

Martha Estelle Ethington Embrey thinks that this Irene may be the same person
as Annie Ethington, listed as first daughter in this family.  She also believes
that the name "Annie" may in fact be "ARRIE" Ethington.  Her note follows:

"Irene Ethington-9805 and Annie Ethington-9782 believed by me to be one and
the same, called ARRIE Ethington.  But that is only what I think and which by
no means makes it official or true.  Need more research on Peter G.
family."
Aunt Irene (Carrie) comes in age order after the unknown child and before Aunt
Ethel.  Ethel was the youngest.

Census:
The 1910 census of Taylor County FL shows daughters Arrie and Ethel Ethington
living with their mother, Adury Ethington.  Adury is a female, age 39, widowed.
Arrie is 16 years old, and her sister Ethel is 13.  Note: Cherry was noted in
the 1910 census as being 47 (born in 1863).  In the 1880 census she was listed
as 19 years old, making her birth year 1861.  In either case, she would be
about 49 in 1910.

It appears that the census may have been misread, and the name "Arrie" is
actually "Annie".  The birth dates for both Annie and Ethel match for thetwo youngest daughters of Peter G. Ethington and his wife Cherry.  However, in
1910 we find only Peter Ethington in the census record.  Cherry is missing.
I think it is safe to assume that the actual name of this head of house hold is
really Cherry Ethington (Adury - Cherry), and she is living in Perry with her
two youngest daughters, Annie and Ethel.  The record will be re-read for
further evaluation.

Heirs of Peter G. Ethington deed to John Fox
Pasco County FL 18 Dec 1916

In this deed, the heirs of Peter G. Ethington are selling to Mr.
Fox their
interests in the real estate of their father, Peter G. Ethington.
Each of the
children of Peter signs the deed, with the exception of daughter Annie.
However, among the signers is one Jesse Easters, and his wife "R.
Easters.

Since Annie is the only child missing, and since R. Easters is an unknown
party, we could assume that daughter "Annie" is somehow now known as "R.
Easters", wife of Jesse.  The initial "R" may be for a middle name now used by
Annie.

Based on this reasoning, daughter Annie will be shown as wife of Jesse
Easters until proof to the contrary.

Note from Estelle Ethington Embray (Dec 1993):
"Edward Vernon had three sisters:  Carry, Irene, and Ethel.  These were all
the sisters I had ever heard about before this research.  I did not know that I
had an Aunt Vernita (Vernisha) and I also had never heard  of one named Annie
or the (unknown) child.  It had always been my understanding that ARRIE was a
family nickname (or short) for Irene, and that they were one and the same
person.  And, then we have grandmother Cherry's statement on record that she
gave birth to 6 children and 5 were still alive..."

Based on this reasoning, and in light of the above problems with a daughter
named Annie, this record will be combined with the record of daughter Irene.
Notes will be combined.

Note from Estelle Ethington Embray (Jan 1994):
I still can't believe that there ever was an Annie Ethington.
This "Arrie"
can sure throw us a curve with this name game.  She was always called and
referred to as Arrie, but it was always understood that Arrie was really Irene.
And later, maybe Arrie was still too long or maybe threadworn from too much
use and so came down to just "R", instead of "Arrie".

When Grandmother Cherry visited us in 1920 I remember her telling my mother
that Irene had married again, and from the conversation it seemed that it must
not have been very long ago.  Them, some months or maybe a year later, I got a
letter from her address to me (Estell Ethington) from "Aunt Irene Bates".
Accordingly, they must have been married somewhere between 1916 and 1920.

Ethel Magie ETHINGTON

Census:
The 1910 census of Taylor County FL shows daughters Arrie and Ethel Ethington
living with their mother, Adury Ethington.  Adury is a female, age 39, widowed.
Arrie is 16 years old, and her sister Ethel is 13.

actually "Annie".  The birth dates for both Annie and Ethel match for the
two youngest daughters of Peter G. Ethington and his wife Cherry.
However, in
1910 we find only Peter Ethington (wife Mary) in the census record.
Cherry is
missing.

I think it is safe to assume that the actual name of this head of house hold is
really Cherry Ethington (Adury - Cherry), and she is living in Perry with her
