Micajah ETHERTON

Micajah Etherton served in the war of 1812 4th Reg East Tennessee Draft Militia Infantry, under Col. Bayless & Captain Jones.

He was a farmer.

Residence:  NE 1/4 SE 1/4 Sec 21 T10S R2W 30 Apr 1833

Micajah was also a tavern operator.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Report from Sherry Kyle
(no date given)

"Micajah was born in Tennessee (probably Cocke Co) between 1790, and 1800. His birth year is probably closer to 1800 based on the evidence that in the 1830 census of Jackson Co IL Micajah's oldest child could not have been older than 15 years.

If we assume that Micajah was married when he was at least 15
years of age and that his first child was born within a year or two of his marriage, then Micajah would have been born about the year 1800.

Micajah's wife was named Rachel and she was born between the years 1780 and 1790 according to the 1830 census.  That means she would have been at least 10 years older than her husband, if, indeed, Micajah was born in 1800 as I have assumed.

-----
NOTE BY PAT BEADLE:  If Micajah was born in 1800 he would only be 15 when he served in the War of 1812 in 1815.  It also isn't likely that he married a woman 10 years his senior when he was only 17.

The usual age for men to marry at this time was around 23-24, or older. If he was that age he would have been born abt. 1793 - 1794.

This would mean he was about 21-22 when he served in the war.

His age at death would be about 47-48.

If Rachel was b. in 1790 (age determined by the 1830 census calculations above) this would mean she was 27 when she married in 1817.  Presuming Micajah was about the same age, or even a couple of year older, this would mean he was b. abt 1788.

If this is true then he would be 27 when he served in the War of 1812
29 when he married - and 53 when he died. This seems reasonable.
-----

In 1830 Micajah and Rachel have two sons and two daughters between the ages of 0 and 15 years.
-----
NOTE BY PAT BEADLE:

Presuming their 1st child was b. in 1818, a year after they were married, this would mean their oldest child was 12 in 1830, and fits age wise with the census calculation.
-----
By 1840 they have added two more sons and another daughter bringing the total number of children to at least seven.  Of these children, the four sons have been identified using the land records of Jackson Co IL.

The sons were:

William Anderson  born about 1824 Cocke Co Tn
James Alexander   born about 1827 TN or IL?
Micajah Hamilton  born about 1832 IL
Alvin H.          born between 1830 and 1840 IL

Micajah evidently migrated to Jackson Co IL from Cocke C TN between 1824(birth of William Anderson) and the 1830 census.

Micajah died in 1841 in Jackson Co IL but his place of burial is as yet unknown.

Micajah's widow Rachel remarried in 1845 to William Brown Arnett.
Since William Brown Arnett was remarried to a Mary Jane Ehterton in 1851, I have assumed that Rachel had died by 1851.  However, her place of burial is also unknown.

Note that Rahcel's maiden name is as yet unproven.  However, I do have a copy of the original marriage license issued in Cocke Co TN but filed in Washington Co TN showing that a Micajah Etherton was married to a Rachel Farbian/Farlan on 7 Jun 1817.  I believe that Rachel may have been named Faubion as Micajah and Rachel are living near Moses Faubion at the time of the 1840 census.

Moses Faubion was also from Cocke Co Tn. However, Faubion researchers tell me that she was not a sister to Moses, but could have been a cousin.

Marriage Records of Washington CO TN 1787 - 1840 by Grammer and Mullins:

Elherton, Micajah / Rachel Farlon  7 Jun 1817
Original Marriage license obtained from Washington CO TN shows that the license was issued in Cocke Co TN. My reading of the license is that Micajah Etherton and Rachel Farbian were licensed to be married on 7 Jun 1817.

Also included was a paper which reads that "The within named persons were joined together as man and wife in the Holy Estate of Matrimony by me Lewis Anderson, Minister of the Gospel."  On the front cover was written "M. Etherton and R. Farlan  June 1817".

Military Service:

1815  Micajah Etherton, 4th REg Captain Branh Jones, Colonel Samuel Bayles, East Tennessee Drafted Militia Infantry, War of 1812.  He appeared on muster roll dated 10 Jun 1815 at Newport, TN.  Newport is the present county seat of Cocke Co TN.

A Power of Attorney granted by Micajah Etherton to Vallentine Sevier (?) dated 17 Jun 1815, Green Co TN.  Wittnesses:  William Palmer, William Martin,John Easterly, and Robert C. Gordon.  National Archives Military Files (no file number given) filed under name of the veteran.

It is not proven that the men listed above are one and the same man as Micajah Etherton who came to Jackson Co IL between 1824 and 1830.

End of report by Sherry Kyle.

Micajah Etherton md. Rachel FARBIN or FAUBION on 7 June 1817 (Washington co., Tenn Marriages by Grammer & Mullins). However, original license was granted in Cocke Co Tenn.

A Micajah Etherton also served in 4th Tenn Reg., East Tenn Militia during war of 1812.

NOTE BY PAT BEADLE:

This land transaction, plus the fact that THOMAS GRANTSOR - MICAJAH & SAMUEL ETHERTON JR are of the same generation - and came from Cocke Co Tenn to Jackson Co Illinois about the same time is a strong case to say they were brothers - all sons of SAMUEL ETHERTON SR.
