Ethington Family

Notes

Mildred Catherine ETHERTON

Obituary:  Murphysboro American 23 Aug 1990.

Thomas Grantsor / Grantson ETHERTON

Information on Thomas Ethington and his descendants comes from Robert E. Etherton-7511 of ST Louis MO.

Popular family belief said that Thomas came from Tennessee. However, in the 1880 censes, his son Henry Harris states that his father Thomas was born in Va.

Thomas settled Hickory Ridge Twp, Jackson County IL in 1828.  He was a farmer.

Per Robert E. Etherton, information comes from John Franklin, son of John M., son of Thomas, son of Thomas, who stated that Thomas' middle name was Grantsor (G R A N T S O R).  This information was dated 16 Sep 1939.

Places of residence were:  VA, Upper East TN, Jackson Co IL.

Report from Sherry Ellis Kyle
26 Mar 1990

Thomas Etherton was born on 16 Nov 1783 probably in Virginia.  The only evidence of Thomas' place of birth is the 1880 census in which Thomas' youngest son Henry Harrison states that his father was born in Virginia as was his mother.

Thomas' wife was named Jennie or Jane Lipe, and she was born on 25 Apr 1785 in Virginia.  Thomas and Jennie / Jane were probably married about 1800 - 1805. The Lipe families of Jackson Co IL came from North Carolina.  I haven't found any evidence that the Lipes ever lived in Cocke Co TN or even in the state of Tennessee.

Thomas migrated to Jackson Co IL about 1827.  Thomas purchased land in Jackson Co IL on 10 Dec 1827.  IN a divorce document filed at the Illinois State Archives for Thomas' son James, it is stated that James Etherton was married to Margaret Meredith in the state of Tennessee on 1 May 1826, but no county was given.  Son Henry Harrison was born in Tennessee in 1826 as shown in the 1880 census.

Thomas died on 10 Jun 1847 and Jane died on 25 Apr 1853.  They are buried in the Etherton Cemetery as are most of their children's families.

Thomas Etherton arrives in Jackson County IL in 1828 according to the
Portrait and Biographical Record of Randolph, Jackson, Perry and Monroe Counties IL.

end of report. --------------------------------------------------------------------

Death date also given as 10 Jun 1847 (Jackson Co IL probate).

I am digging through sites for my Etherton Family tree also. Going to the Etherton.net site, I found this line...

Thomas Grantsor Etherton - William Carroll Etherton Sr - Andrew Jackson Etherton - George Washington Etherton - Anna Larie Etherton (grandmother - Anna White (mother) and my self and siblings.

I was very surprised to find out that I grew up in Fredericksburg, Va right next to Spotsylvania Co where Ethertons had settled and colonized?  Annie.

We have not yet been able to prove that Thomas Etherton b. 1783 VA was the son of Samuel Etherton b. abt 1740-1750 as listed in the 1830 census of Jackson co Ill, but is seems logical.

Thomas Etherton b. 1783 VA md. Jennie / Jane (Lipe) ?? maiden name not proven.

Minerva E. (Nancy) HILLER

Called "Nancy" in 1860 census.
Per Sherry Kyle, still living in the 1880 census.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pedigree chart on familysearch.com shows Minerva E. (Nancy) Hiller d. 23 Oct 1847, Jackson, Illinois.  If so, this would mean William Carroll Etherton had a 2nd marriage and all children b. after 1847 were by the 2nd wife.  Perhaps this is why the name William's wife is shown both as Minerva E. and Nancy.
