George Washington MILES

George Washington MIles, son of Robert and Eunice, was born May 2 1854 in Ray
County Missouri.  IN 1882 George moved to Bacca County, Colorado.
George and
his brother John A. Miles lived on a ranch.  At that time Bacca County was
known as Ouray.  IN the cnesus of 1880 we find a George W. Miles who was born
in 1830 living in Ouray County Colorado.  This may have been a relative of our
George Washington Miles.

George was breaking a team of horses one day when they became frightened and
broke away from him.  They were running wildly as fast as they could towards an
open doorin the barn.  He reasoned if he could close the opposite dfoor he
would successfully stop their flight.  He ran around the barn and managed to
get the door closed, but the frightened team ran right over the door that he
was unable to hold.  Underneath the door, George suffered a severely bruised
body.  He rested in bed several days, and upon his believed recuperation, got
up to walk around, and dropped dead.  He died from internal bleeding on March
16, 1910, at the age of 55.  George was a member of the Masonas and Modern
Woodmen and Industrial Club.

Emma A. MCKAY

On November 28, 1889 George Washington Miles married Emma McKay of Attica
Kansas.  Emma was born January 16, 1865 in Grundy County Illinois.
The
marriage took place at the home of her parents in Attica Kansas with the
Reverand William Hayes officiating.  The Attica Advocate dated December 6 1889
mentions that the bride even remembered the newspaper staff by bringing some
wedding cake by their office.  George and Emma left on the evening train for a
visit in Kansas, before returning to their home in Bacca County Colorado.

George and Emma had a daughter November 4, 1890, but she died on the same
day.  May was born  November 18, 1891.  Eunice was born September 12, 1893.  In
1896, George and Emma became concerned because there were no schools in Bacca
County for their daughters.  They decided to move to Garden City, Kansas that
year so that the girls would be able to get an education.  George and John A,
his brother  went into the partnershp of the Miles Brother's Lumber Company.
It was a most successful business.  At the time of George's death his net worth
was about $13,000.

            - Philicia McKee

Per Jane Shaw, Emma A. McKay born in Independence, Montgomery, KS.

Nell MILES

Another tragedy occureed due ot the good nature of Emma.  Emma had agreed to
store a gun for her neighbor, whose husband was a dentist and had a problem
with alcohol.  Their neighbor feared that in a drunken state her husband would
some night come home and shoot something or someone.  On September 20, 1915,
daughter Nell discovered the gun when she was looking for a key in the buffet
drawer.  Nell knew nothing about operating a gun, and when she picked it up
asking her mother what it was, it simultaneously discharged lodging a bullet in
Emma's head, killing her instantly.
