Peaceful in the grave so low

M.L.M Edenton was born in Spotysylvania County Virginia in 1811, joined the baptist church in 1832. Married Miss Lavinia Smith in 1836, moved to Fayette County, Tennessee in 1845, and he and his wife united with the Oakland Baptist church, she dying that same year.In 1848 he married Mrs. Mary Lewis, and they moved near Macon, and he joined the Macon Baptist church, and was soon elected as deacon, which office he filled to the glory of God until the day of his death, on the 6th of January 1887, in the full triumph of faith, leaving an aged widow, and two sons by his first wife, both devoted and useful members of the Macon Baptist chruch.
Brother Edenton was truly active in business, and fervent in sprit, never neglecting his church duties for other business. His church expected to see him at all of its meetings, a man of great energy and public spirit, a leader in every enterprise designed to advance the best interests of the county, indeed it is very seldom so much energy, public spirit, and evoted piety are combined in one man and he will be much missed in all walks of life.
(from newspaper clipping)
By the death of M.L.M. Edenton, which occured at his home in Macon, on the 6th instant Fayette County lost one of her best and most worthy citizens. Mr. Edenton had been a citizen of the county for more than 40 years, and was a man who commanded the respect, esteem and confidence of all who knew him. He will be sadly missed in the community in which for so many years he has been a leading spirit in all public enterprises and good works.(from newspaper clipping)
Mr. M.L.M Edenton died at Macon Jan 6, 1887 in his seventy sixth year. He had been one of our best and leading citizens for many years, and his liberality will be greatly missed in every public enterprise. It is seldom so much energy in business, public spirit and zealous Christianity are combined in one man. He was an honest man in the strictest sense, a bountiful provider, successful in business and indeed a useful man, and will be much missed in all the walks of life.Note: The two daughters of M.L.M. and Lavinia Edenton both died young, on the same day (26 Feb 1842) per Mary Elizabeth Low Weaver (See FHL film # 0000033).
July 1998:
A trip to the Spotsylvania courthouse by HDE found Janet England indexing all chancery suits. She was able to search her computer index, not yet complete, and found a suit now identified by her as number 1850-005 Smith v. Smith. That suit shows Lavinia A. Smith, daughter of James and Mary Smith, as wife of Minor L. M. Ethington. This suit says that Lavinia died in 1847 leaving two children, James Caswell Ethington and William H. Ethington. The suit handles a dispute among the Smith family members about some land.
