Died as a result of an automobile accident.

Following from Arizona newspaper dated 1 Sep (no year given):

MESA MAN DIES FOLLOWING ACCIDENT

MESA, Ariz, Sep 1 - Death of William Ethington, 53, prominent rancher of the Chandler district who died here last night within an hour after escaping unscratched from an automobile accident, was attributed by physicians today to shock superinduced by excitement.

Mr. Ethington was driving north on McDonald street when his car collided at the intersection of Main and McDonald with a roadster driven by Clifford Isley, who was headed west.  Young Isley seeing his danger, leaped from his machine and escaped injury.  His care was turned completely over, according to the report, but little damage was done.

At the time of the accident, it was believed that Mr. Ethington had escaped with no damage or injury.  He assisted in pushing his car to the garage run by his brother, Pete Ethington.

Mr. Ethington died on the way to his home near Chandler.  He is survived by his widow, and two children.  Six brothers and a sister also survive.  Funeral services will be announced by W.A. Burton, following advices from relatives in the east.

Callie Montgomery DERRINGER

TIB for Preston Ethington shows his mother as
"Kelly Mogomery Durner" or "Callie Derringer"

PER ROY ETHINGTON, FATHER OF HAROLD D. ETHINGTON-465, LAST NAME WAS DURNER. PER ARCHIVE FAM GROUP SHEET FOR WILLIAM FOREST, ENDOW DATE FOR KELLY DURNER WAS 3 APR 1927.

Letter from Winnifred Ethington March 1971:
"Their [Preston's and Sallie's] mother died at the age of 23 of typhoid fever.
At the time, Preston was three.  This was in 1905 as he was born in 1902.  The Father, whose hame I believe was William, was killed in some kind of accident [car?] a few years later in Mesa.  Having neither mother nor father, Preston and Sally were raised by their Grandmother Derringer, a younger sister of Callie's.  My husband, Preston, died in April 1953 of a coronary and Margaret died (cancer), and Sally died (multiple surgury) about the time of the middle sixties.  There is also some Cherokee Indian blood in the family, on his mother's side,  her granparents or great grandparents.  Preston had one wife before me.  Her name is Adele.  I don't know her maiden name.  They had four children:  Donald, Betty, Mary, and Sue Jean.  I think they were divorced in about 1943.  You might be able to trace her in Texas throught the nursing proffession.

"I have borne three children by Preston Albert Ethington.  They are all living. Their names are:  Phyllis Lynn Ethington, Steven Craig Ethington, and Cheryl Gail Ethington.  Phyllis has just recently joined the United States Army and is now at Ft. McClellon Alabama.  Steven joined the United States Air Force in June, 1965 after his graduation from Nordhoff High School in Ojai California.
Cheryl is attending Sawyer Business College in Ventura California."
