Preston Price ETHINGTON

OCCUPATION: FARMER
HUSBAND'S AGE AT MARR: 23
WIFE'S AGE AT MARR   : 18

Letter from Mildred Jennings to HDE dated 29 Jun 1993:

"I have searched through the old books again.  I found this that I thought you might be interested in.  July 29, 1903 during a protracted meeting Pastor Rev. N.S. Thomas with Bro. Junius Millard of Baltimore preached 12 days and nights.  PRICE ETHINGTON came as a candidate for baptism.  Simon Snider and wife also came by letter from the Mt. Vernon Baptist church, which is about 12 miles from here.  Sallie and Martha had alrady made a profession of faith I don't remember the dates."

Sallie Kate SNYDER

Report on SALLIE KATE SNYDER
as of 18 Apr 1992
by Harold D. Ethington

Sallie Kate Snyder was the first wife of my grandfather, Preston Price Ethington.  Not much has been known about Sallie since she died after only a few months of marriage to Preston Price.  They were married in May of 1906, and Sally died in November of that same year.  Family records are scarce about this marriage, the only reference coming from the journals of my Grandmother, Eva Ethington, second wife of Preston Price who wrote:

"In May, 1906, when he was 23, he had married 18 year old Sallie Kate Snyder.
The young couple were both born in Grafenburg, Shelby County, so that may
also have been where they met, or were married.  They settled in Lenore, but
after few short months of wedded bliss, Sallie died of consumption (Now
known as TB).  She had been born 18 Aug 1888."

My first step in the research process was to look at census records for the period.  I knew that I would not find the couple in the census records, but thought that perhaps I could find Sally as a child in the 1900 census.  Census records for Nelson County, where the couple settled and Sallie died, were checked with no results, so I next checked Shelby County.  There I found the following:

1900 Shelby Co KY Census ED 76 sheet 72 fam 221/226
      Southville Precinct

Snyder, Simon     Head   W M  born Dec 1860  age 39 married 16 ys farmer
Snyder, Addie     Wife   W F  born Jun 1864  age 35 married 16 ys
Snyder, Martha    Dau    W F  born Oct 1884  age 15 single
Snyder, Sallie    Dau    W F  born Aug 1888  age 11 single

I wasn't sure if this was "our" Sallie, so checked the soundex index to the 1900 census for any other Sallie, or Kate Snyder.  This search found several Katie Snyders, born variously in 1887 and 1885, but none born in 1888.  None of these Katie Snyders were residents of Shelby County.  I checked and found that the Southville Precinct was within about 10 miles of Graephenburg, the birthplace of Preston Price, and home of the William Preston Ethington family. Also, the birth date in the census record (Aug 1888) matched the birth date given by my Grandmother Eva in the family record.

In an effort to strengthen the thesis that Simon and Addie were indeed the parents of Preston's first wife, I called the county clerk of Shelby County KY. The clerk there agreed to check the 1906 marriages to see if she could find the marriage of this couple, and was successful in doing so.  They were married in Shelby County on 14 May 1906.  Sallie was 17 years old, and Preston was 23. Sally's father (name not given) was born in Shelby County.  This was additionaly evidence that Sallie of Southville Precinct could have been the wife of Preston.
The clerk agreed to mail me a copy of the marriage certificate.

I next checked the 1910 census of Shelby County and found the following:

1910 Shelby Co KY census ED 1125 Sheet 3A dw 29/29
       Southville Precinct

       Snyder, Simon P.  Head  M W  age 49  married 26 ys
       Snyder, Addie L.  Wife  F W  age 46  married 26 ys
                                             2 children born, 0 living
Clark, Ruth       Granddau   age  7  single

Here, I saw that Simon and Addie had had two children, and each of them had died prior to 1910.  A grandchild, Ruth Clark, lived with Simon and Addie. This provided the fact that Martha, older sister to Sallie, had married a Mr. Clark, she had died, and their child Ruth was now living with the Grandparents Snyder.  The fact that both daughters had died by 1910 fit with the thesis that Sallie, daughter of Simon and Addie, was indeed Sally, the wife of Preston Price Ethington.

The librarian for the Shelby County Library was most helpful in providing Snyder and Clark names from the Shelby County phone book.  I began to call the most likely on the list, and soon was talking to a Mr. Chester Clark, age about 70, and a resident of Southville, Shelby County.

Chester Clark was most helpful, and recalled a Ruth Clark who had lived in the area at one time.  She had married Greenbrier Hunley, had died early, and her mother was named Martha.  He thought that Martha's maiden name had been Snyder. He did not have any knowledge of Simon or Addie Snyder, but provided names for Ruth's two brothers, and said that they were alive and living in FL. He directed me to Mrs. Evelyn Hunley, a resident of Shelbyville KY, who had married Greenbrier Hunley after his first wife, Ruth Clark, had died.

During our conversation, I neglected to ask Chester Clark just if and how he was related to Ruth Clark.  But, he did ask what my last name was, I told him, and he said that he was related to the Ethington family also.  He was a grandson of Riley Clark, who was the the son of Ann Eliza Ethington and a grandson of Fielding Ethington.  Riley Clark had married Nancy Jane Ethington, who was also a grandchild of Fielding Ethington through her father, GeorgeWashington Ethington.  This was quite amazing to me, since I had just pulled the name Chester Clark from the phone book.  I noted the information, told Chester that I would print it all up, and send it to him.  He seemed interested in that, and I returned to my study of the Sallie Kate Snyder problem.

As I began to enter the information on Sallie and her sister, Martha, I saw that Martha had married a Charlie Clark (they were the parents of Ruth Clark and her two brothers).  But, I didn't know just how Charlie Clark and Chester were related, if at all.  I knew that I would need that information to make the record complete, so called Chester once again.

Chester came to the phone, I asked him what relation he was to Charlie, husband of Martha, and he told me that Charlie was his Uncle. Suddenly it dawned on me:  Here were two girls in the Snyder family, Martha and Sallie. Sallie had married Preston Price, a grandson of George Washington Ethington, and her sister, Martha, had married Charlie Clark, another grandson of the same man!  Both girls were married to Ethington boys!  Both girls had died young. Neither girl had been properly identified with her parents in the family records.  Now, it had all come together and could be properly recorded.

The marriage certificate for Sallie Kate and Preston Price arrived from the Shelby County Courthouse with the following information:

Marriage Bond # 470

Be it known that we, P.P. Ethington, and S.P. Snyder as surity are bound for the marriage of P.P. Ethington and Sallie Katie Shyder... dated at Shelbyville, Shelby County Kentucky 14 May 1906.

                          (signed)  P.P. Ethington
                          (signed)  S.P. Snider

                         name of groom:  P.P. Ethington
                   residence of grooms:  Shelbyville
                          age of groom:  23
number of marriage of groom:  1st
                            Occupation:  farmer
                   Birthplace of groom:  Shelby County
Name and Birthplace of Groom's Father:  Henry County
Name and Birthplace of Groom's Mother:  Henry County

name of Bride:  Sallie Katie Snider
                    Residence of Bride:  Shelby County
                          Age of Bride:  17
Number of marriage of Bride:  1st
                   Birthplace of Bride:  Shelby
Name and Birthplace of Bride's Father:  Shelby
Name and Birthplace of Bride's Mother:  Livingston County

To be married at Shelbyville Kentucky on the 16th day of May, 1906.

I certify that the above is correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. Wittness my hand this 14th day of May, 1906.

                                (signed) P.P. Ethington

From this marriage certificate, we find that the father of Sallie Katie Snyder (spelled both Snyder and Snider) is S.P. Snyder.  This corresponds with the census records of 1910 where Simon's middle initial is given as P.  This evidence is sufficient to conclude that the parents of Sallie Katie Snyder are Simon P. Snyder and Addie Snyder, and that her sister was Martha Snyder, mother of Ruth Clark.

Burial for Sallie K. Snyder, wife of Preston Price Ethington, was found in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Shelby County KY where the headstone is inscribed as follows:

Effington, Sallie K. wife of P.P. Effington
 born 1880  died 1906

Information from TIB indicates the following ordinance dates for Sallie Kate Snyder:

 B:  27 Feb 1923
 E:  29 Jan 1931
SS:  21 Jun 1935  (This date from Zenna Ethington only)

Additional Seal to Spouse date from HDE records is 19 Apr 1973 PV.

Elizabeth ETHINGTON

Reference to this child is found in the family of Warren and Bertha Ethington,
Shelby Co KY census 1900 Fam #183 Shelbyville North dist.  The first name is
not clear.

Information from Betty Ann Bowles in about 1980 shows 6 children, with Elizabeth as the only name not listed with the other children.  Will assume
that the unclear name mentioned above is that of Elizabeth.  Betty Ann States
that Elizabeth never married.

A grave in Section P of Grove Hill Cem in Shelbyville KY shows Elizabeth
Ethington (1902 - 1936) buried near Warren and Bertie S. Ethington.
Since this
Elizabeth EThington was born after the 1900 census, not clear if she is
daughter to Warren and Bertie or not.  Need further information.
See letter
from John B. Clark to HDE dated 2 Oct 1993 for burial reference.

Explanation from John B. Clark in letter to HDE dated 18 Nov 1993:
"1902 - 1936 is what is on the stone.  I think what has happened Warren die
in 1937 Elizabeth die in 1936.  That this is probably the same Elizabeth born
before 1900 census.  I think Bertie prob was upset this kind of luck.  Told the
people were she got stone wrong date, are they cut wrong date on grave stone."

Based on this reasoning by John B. Clark, will assume that this Elizabeth is
the daughter of Warren and Bertie.

An Elizabeth Ethington, Female White age 27 (born 1903) parents both born KY, is found in the 1930 KY census age 27 at the Rential State Hosptial for Insane in Lakewood, Jefferson County KY on 4 April 1930.  See census page 65.  This person could possibly be the daughter mentioned above.

Shelby Thomas ETHINGTON

SHELBY ETHINGTON WAS UNMARRIED AS OF 1942.  HE LATER MARRIED, HAD NO CHILDREN. -JWE.

Per Betty Ann Bowles, in about 1980, Shelby T. never married. Middle initial of "T." from her records.

Obituary from Shelbyville KY Sentinel News Wed 11 May 1994:
Last fall, Shelby Ethington was roasted and toasted at First Baptist Church for his countless financial contributions, one of which is the flower garden between the sanctuary and education building.  He even tended to the care of the landscaping, something he said, "I've always enjoyed watching things grow."

He stopped by the newspaper office two weeks ago to pick up the pictures he had submitted for the story.  He was going in the hospital for new surgery.

The 84 year old Shelby County native died Sunday, May 8, 1994, at Baptist Hospital East.

The Young at Heart group, an organization for senior adults, hosted the luncheon last October in honor Ethington.  Ron NOrdan, the minister of music at the church, siad at the time, "We feel very fortunate to have Shelby Ethington and people like him in our church who unselfishly give of their time."

Ethington was a softspoken man who was known for his stylish appearance, despite his senior years.  He loved loud sports coats, from pink to plaids. But, Ethington loved him church more, having been a member of First Baptist for 70 years.

Expressions of sympathy to the retired farmer and Army vereral of World War II are to go to the church's building fund.

Shelby Thomas Ethington, who lived on Ashland Ave., was the son of the late Warren R. And Bertie Stapleton Ethington.

He is survived by two nephews, Robert B. Berger of Durham, NC, and Sen. Charles Berger of Harlan.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 am at Shannon Funeral Home with the Rev. Nordan and the Rev. Kenneth Shouse officiating.

Burial is in Grove Hil Cemetery.  Expressions of sympathy may be made to Shelbyville First Baptist Church Building fund.

end.

From John B. Clark:
"I understand the Shelby is the youngest child of Warren and Bertie.  Shelby was never married. He always lived with mother till she died.  I knew Shelby since about 1955.  He lived about 4 blocks from me.

William (twin) ETHINGTON

In the Henry Co Ky 1870 census it is noted that William is a twin.

Husband's age at marr: 27
Wife's age at marr   : 23

About the year 1900 when William had a good sized family of small children, he took the entire family to west central Oklahoma to live.  After living on a farm for a few years, they moved to Watonga, Oklahoma where he and his son, Tom, were living when they died.  William's widow, Margaret, now (1942) lives with her daughter in Oklahoma City.

See notes for Calvin Dale Ethington, grandson of this unknown Ethington. There is no third marriage for William known at this time.  The third marriage is shown only because it is not known who the parents of Calvin Dale Ethington are.

Information from Jack Ethington, of Oklahoma City OK in May, 1991 to HE:
William was bout 6 ft tall, and worked in the Watanga School district as a janitor.  Liddia Margaret always dressed very neatly, never without a pin or a broach.  She was very small, only about one hundred pounds.

A large photograph of William and his wife Lydia Margaret has been received from Karen Klingler of Rexburg ID.  This will be placed in the William Ethington file.  Other photos if file.

Some information from James Ethington Family Bible (James, son of William and Sarah Ann Callender) in possession of James Eldon Ethington son of George Jesse Ethington.

Per Karen Klingler, William received the James Ethington family bible from his father, Aaron Lewis Ethington.

According to Elma Ethington, of Oklahoma City OK (summer 1992) in conversation with HDE, William came to OK in a wagon with a team. He was diabetic.

Marriage license to Susan Kelly shows William age of 20 in 1887, born 1867.  But, marriage license to Liddia Margaret Ethington in 1888 shows age as 27, born 1861.

Liddia Margaret Elizabeth ETHINGTON

Lydia Margaret (Susan) Ethington, married first her first cousin, James Ethington, son of Fielding H. Ethington.  They had one daugter, Callie, who married and had children.  They married at the home of her father, John Jack Ethington per license.

Lydia Margaet married second, her distant cousin William Ethington, and had a large family.  She now lives in Oklahoma City and has many descendants in Oklahoma.

                   - J.E. Ethington

Information from Betty Ann Bowles in about 1980 states that Lydia Margaret Ethington was married FIRST to her 1st cousin, James Ethington, and SECOND, to William Ethington, son of Aaron Ethington and Susan Adams.

For ordinance information, see igi batch 8212090 sheet 54. The birth of Lidia Margaret is entered twice in the igi.  The second time she is shown as born in Blackwell, Henry, Ky.  Baptized 12 Jan 1978 sl, endowed 21 Feb 1978 SL, sealed to parents 20 Mar 1978 SL.  See batch 7718601 sheet 81.

See Lydia Ethington-32.

From Elma Ethington-238 in Oklahoma City OK 5 May 1991 to HE:
"Liddia Margaret Ethington weighed less than 100 pounds, even after 9 children.  She dressed very neat, alway had a pin or broach with her dress. She had asthma, was advised by a doctor to move from Kentucky to drier climate. She had one daughter by a previous marriage who went back to Kentucky.

"Liddia and William had 9 children.  They were

     Mattie           George Jess             Eva (Chauffity)
     Jack             Lillian (died young)    Charles

Photos in file of husband, William Ethington.  From Karen Klingler.

A Family Group Sheet for the William Ethington / Lydia Margaret Ethington family received from Karen Klingler Feb 1992 states that "Lydia Margaret Ethington had two husbands who preceeded her in death.  They were Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Ethington, by whom she had a female child named Callie Ethington. Callie stayed in Kentucky when the rest of the family moved to Oklahoma."

This note has not been added by Karen Klingler, rather seems to come from some older member of the family.  Need to research the Johnson marriage for Lydia Margaret.

Date shown by Karen Klingler for marriage of William and Lydia Margaret is 14 Mar 1888.  This same date had been recorded by HDE as the marriage date of Lydia Margaret and her husband James Ethington.  Since Karen is great-grandaughter to Lydia Margaret, her date will be used for William/Lydia marriage.  Need further research to clarify.
                                 - HDE  Mar 1992

Liddia was known as Maggie or Meg  per Elma Ethington.  Also, Elma says that Liddia Mgt loved to go to church.  She would take as many as three of her children with her on horseback and go to church  -  regardless of flooded creeks etc.

Letter from Dorothy Claxon to HDE dated 3 Mar 2001, and telcom 8 Mar 2001 with HDE:

"The subject of my Great Grandma Lidia Margaret Ethington-156 needs to be corrected.  From the Ethington Family Record I discovered that my Great Grandma Lidia Margaret Ethington-156 was still living until 1948.  I was twenty years old at that time.  I had assumed, she had died before I was born.  This is because I never heard anyone ever speak of her.  Lidie Margaret lived to be a Great Great Grandma to her Granddaughter Grace Ethington Rodger's six living grandchildren.  I don't believe she ever knew this and I am almost sure no one else ever realized it either."

Susan E. KELLY

SUSAN DID NOT LIVE LONG AFTER HER MARRIAGE TO WILLIAM.
Note in James Ethington Family Bible says that:
"Susan Ethington was born September the 5th, 1864".

Will assume that this refers to Susan Kelly, wife of William Ethington.

Death:

William's birth year and state are from Henry Co Ky 1850 census page 461 B dwelling 314.

28 Jan 1992  -  MERGING OF WILLIAM-77 & WILLIAM-159
This date, after finding an 1870 Shelby County KY census record for Marshalland his wife Thursday it became clear that William-159 could not be the son of Marshall (as erroniously entered), since they were both born in the same year. Rather, William-159 is likely the same man as William-77, brother to Marshall, and each sons of Joseph L. Ethington and Mary Marshall.  William-159 is hereby merged with William-77 who survives, and the family of Marshall shows only the daughter of the 1870 Shelby Census, Mary, born in 1852.

Also, see William M. Ethington-6915.  Death record found in Coles Co IL for William M. Ethington, born KY 1829, parents not identified.  Died 10 Nov 1897.

William was thrown by a horse into a tree and was blinded.  He lived 10 years after the accident.  Calvin, his son, raised Barney Slagle, a cripple, and some relation.  Sarah Raines could be Sarah Rammy.

Letter from Roscoe Gerald Ethington to Pat Beadle in about 1970 mentions an "Uncle Joseph".  It is not clear if this is a brother to his father, William, or what the relation may be.

30 Mar 1991
Evidence supporting this William Ethington as the same William who appears in Illinos records in the middle 1800's is a follows:

 1.  Oakley Valmore Ethington-511 identifies the family of his father, James William Ethington-265 as follows:

                  1.  Minnie Ethington
                  2.  Calvin Ethington
                  3.  Martin Ethington
                  4.  Mollie Ethington
                  5.  James William Ethington
                  6.  Barney ("Bump") Slagle Ethington, a cripple who was
adopted and raised by Calvin Ethington.

The document supplied by Oakley with this information is titled "Husband's Family", and is found in his file (possession of HE).

2a.  The 1860 census of Randolph Twsp, McLean County, IL page 109/605 shows:

        Ethington, William   30 M farmer $850 KY
        Ethington, Sarah     24 F             VA
        Ethington, Charles N. 3 M             IL
        Ethington, Martin M.  1 M             IL

2b.  The 1870 census of Loxa Post Office, Lafayette, Coles County  Illinois page 185 shows:
        Effington, William 41 M W Farmer $400   KY
Effington, Sarah   33 F W Keeping House VA
        Effington, Charles 13 M W               IL
        Effington, Martin  11 M W               IL
        Effington, Winnie   7 F W               IL  born 1863
        Effington, Calvin   5 M W               KY
        Effington, James    4 M W               KY
        Effington, Humphry  1 M W               KY

Note that the family has moved from Kentucky to Coles County within the past year.  Son Humphry, age 1, was born in KY.
This is the only reference we have for son Charles and daughter Winnie.  This census entry found Jan 2005 by HDE.
Cannot explain children born in 1857, 1859, and 1863 when marriage date is documented at 1864 in Missouri.  No children are
born there.  I think this marriage date may be in error.

2c.  The 1880 census of Wayne Co IL (FHL film #1,254,257 page 29 Dwelling 274 family 286, Town of Four Mile) shows the following:

name                   age  rel   occ  born   f born  m born

Ethington, William     50          f    KY      KY      KY
                 Sarah       44    w    hk   W Va    W Va    W Va
                 Martin      20    s     f    IL      KY      KY
Calvin      15    s          KY      KY      KY
James       12    s          KY      KY      KY
                 Humphry M.  11    s          KY      KY      KY
Minnie       6    d          IL      KY      KY

Four of the five children mentioned by Oakley (Minnie, Martin, James and Calvin) are present in this Illinois family, with Mollie not found (Sarah perhaps?), and the younger Humphry M. added.  Calculating birth years for each from the above census information we find:

                                  birth year
                William             1830
                Sarah               1836
                Martin              1860
                Calvin              1865
                James               1868
                Humphry M.          1869
                Minnie              1874

 3.  William Martin Ethington-4693 and his sister Patricia Roe Ethington Ellenberger-5878 in correspondance received by HE during 1990 identify their grandparents as Martin W. Ethington and Talitha Alice Ethington, from Clay County IL.  A search of the Clay County IL marriages shows the following:

          FHL film # 1,008,795 page 39
Martin Ethington, of Fairfield, Wayne County Illinois of
the age of 23, and Miss Telitha A. Corder, of Hoosier, Clay
County Illinois of the age of 18, ... married at the residence
of the bride's Father in the county of Clay on the 8th day
          of October 1886.

Martin's birth year, calculated from this certificate, would have been 1863.

Birth records for Clay county IL show the following children born to Martin and Talitha Alice Ethington:

              birth                              father      mother
date       order  name                        born age    born age

   19 Oct 1888  1    Georgia Franklin Ethington  IL   27     IL   22
   20 Oct 1890  2    James William Ethington     IL   28     IL   23
    3 Apr 1895  4    Sallie May Ethington        IL   34     IL   25

A middle initial is given for Martin on the record of Georgia Franklin Ethington, but it is not clear what it may be.  It looks like a "2".

Birth year for the Father, Martin Ethington, calculated from these ages in the given years would be 1861, 1862, and 1861 respectivily.

Another possible son of William-159 and Sarah is found in Clay Co IL at the same time as their son Martin.  He is William C. Etherton, who married Rosetta Wolf in Clay Co 26 May 1888, and had a child born there:  (female) Etherton, born 15 Sep 1895.  William C. Etherton is RIN 1337.  He was a carpenter.

Marriage record of Humphrey Marshall Ethington states that he was the son of William Ethington and (?) Flinn.  This would suggess a second marriage for William Ethington.

CONCLUSION:

I feel that the evidence is sufficient to support the conclusion that Martin Ethington, of Clay County IL, born 1861/62, is the same Martin as found in the Wayne County IL family of William and Sarah Ethington, born 1860. Note also that Clay county and Wayne county are adjacent counties, further supporting this connection.

                          - Harold Ethington
                            30 Mar 1991

A death record found May 1991 by HE in the Coles Co IL courthouse shows a William M. Ethington dying on 10 Nov 1897 at age 68.  This would placed his birth year at 1829, noted as being born in Kentucky.  This William is buried at Bethel Cemetery, Coles Co., IL.  He will be entered as a new individual until further identification is available.  See RIN 6915.
