birth from Waltrip family bible.
Wife's name and birth date from Waltrip family bible in possession of Katherine
Waltrip, Charleston Coles IL.
The birth of Mahala Waltrip seems out of place in this family. The information comes from the Waltrip Family bible in possession of Katherine
Waltirt Bugle, in Charleston Coles IL. Mahala is listed with other obvious
children of Enoch and Mahaly, but further information is needed to resolve this
apparent childbearing period of over 30 years.
REPORT ON LEWIS ETHINGTON
25 May 1991
by Harold D. EthingtonThe first reference to Lewis Ethington is found in the Owen County KY Deed records, where an incidental reference to his marriage is as follows:
Lewis Ethington and Sanderreller [transcribor's message: [Cinderella?)] Shelton were married Apr 1, 1824.
Consent from Father David Shelton. Bond:
Hiram Shelton. Test: Fielding Ethington. The source of the marriage date shown in this record (22 Dec 1822) is not known as of this date. Since three different sources, documentated in these notes, show 1 Apr 1824 as the marriage date, that date will be changed to 1 Apr 1822 until further proof to the contrary.
This marriage note comes immediately after an abstract of a deed executed by David Shelton and Henrietta Shelton in Owen County deed records.
From later census, we see that Lewis was born in the year 1801, so he would have been 23 years old at the time of his marriage to Cinderella. She was born in the year 1802, so would have been about 22 at the time of marriage.
A note from Betty Ann Bowles contained in a letter to Ray Ethington of Columbia MO dated May 1966 states:
"I know of only 2 children [for Lewis and Cynthia]: George, who married his second cousin Mary Jane Ethington, and another boy who became a Unitarian Minister."
"Lewis may have also married a Miss James...". IGI shows marriage of a Lewis Ethington and Miss James on 24 Dec 1822, of Henry, KY.
SS: 12 Dec 1989 JRIVE.James William Ethington of Seattle (page 42) also says:
"On 1 Apr 1824 in Owen Co KY, Lewis Ethington was licensed to marry Cynthia (Cinderella) Shelton. This is probably the Lewis Ethington, son of William and Sarah Ann Callender, who later married Miss James. There is no definite information as to whether this was the first or second marriage."
Since the census records confirm that Lewis was married to Cinderella at least up to age 60, it is likely that if this marriage to Miss James occured, it was prior to his marriage to Cinderella. Need further documentation from Betty Ann to substanciate. With marriage date of 24 Dec 1822 from IGI, will add Miss James as first wife of Lewis Ethington (20 Nov 1994 - HDE).
The IGI lists a marriage of Lewis Ethington to "Laudermiller Shelton" in Owen County KY 1 Apr 1824. This appears to be the marriage to Cinderella Shelton, and was sealed 26 Nov 1943 SL. A second submission under the name "Scinderella Shelton also appears with the same dates, it appearing that the extractor was unable to properly read the name in the original record, and submitted it under the two different spellings.
In the census year 1830, Lewis appears in the Owen County census record as age 20-30, with two sons under 5, and one daughter under five. His wife is shown as age 20-30 also [see dwelling 317]. His two brothers-in-law, Hiram and David Shelton, are living with him and Cinderella.
In the year 1840, Lewis and his family have made a move to Crawford County Illinois, just across the Indiana line and a little south of Terre Haute [See 1840 census Crawford CO IL #304]. In the same area, are Polly Ethington, the daughter of his Uncle Fielding Ethington and Elizzbeth Williams, together with Polly's husband William Shelton. After Elizabeth William's death, Fielding had married Nancy Shelton. Nancy Shelton, William Shelton, and Cinderella Shelton, were all children of David and Henrietta Shelton of Owen County KY. To recap:
Children of David and Henrietta Shelton who married Ethingtons:
1. Nancy, married to Fielding Ethington
2. Cinderella, married to Lewis Ethington, nephew of Fielding
3. William, married to Polly, daughter of Fielding and Elizabeth W.Later it will be seen that Polly and William Shelton named one of their sons Fielding, apparently in honor of Polly's father Fielding Ethington.
During the 1840's, Lewis is active in Crawford Co IL, interacting often with his brother-in-law William Shelton. His name appears several times in the land records, at one time mortgaging his personal property to William Shelton for a personal loan. Not all deeds were run while at the Crawford County Court house in May of 1991 (HE) due to lack of time. These deeds should be inspected to make this record complete. However, it will be noted that Lewis sold 40 acres to the School Board in January of 1845. This deed was signed by both Lewis and his wife Cinderella. He wittnessed a deed for William Shelton in November of 1840, and mortgaged his personal property to William Shelton on 19 May 1857 (possibley 1851).
References for the above are:
Lewis Ethington of Crawford IL to school 40 acres Book D pg 437
Lewis Ethington mortgage to Wm Shelton Book F page 346 19 May 1857 (1851?)On 25 Apr 1843 in Crawford Co IL, Lewis Ethington purchases 1 lot of sheep at the estate sale of Mr. William Hix, deceased. Price: $8.50
In the year 1850, Lewis's family appears in the census record as follows:
Etherington, Lewis age 49 (born 1801) M farmer $100 born VA
Cinderella age 48 (born 1802 F born KY
James age 24 (born 1826) M farmer KY
Hezekiah age 19 (born 1831) M farmer KY
John H. age 17 (born 1833) M farmer KY
Peter S. age 13 (born 1837) M born KY
Joseph age 11 (born 1839) M born KY
Sally A. age 9 (born 1841) F born KY
George age 5 (born 1845) M born KY
Nancy P. age 3 (born 1847) F born KYNote that this listing of children does not agree with the 1830 census which shows 3 children under that age of 5 (all born between 1825 - 1830). Need further information to understand this discrepency.
Normally, it would be possible to see when the family moved from Kentucky to Illinois by the birth state of each child. However, this census taker has made an obvious error in listing all the children as born in Kentucky, when we have shown that the family was in Illinois by the 1840 census. Sally, George, and Nancy were all born after 1840, and most likely in the state of Illinois unless Cinderella returned to Kentucky for each birth. This seems highly unlikely. Also, Joseph, in the 1860 Nemaha County Kansas census states that he was born in the state of Indiana.
In this census year, the family of David Ethington is shown not far away as follows:
Etherington, David age 21 (born 1829) M farmer KY
Maria age 20 (born 1830) F KY
James W. age 1 (born 1849) M ILThis is obviously another son of Lewis and Cinderella, married to Maria Lindsay as shown by later records.
In the census taker's mortality schedules, it shows that Lewis J. Etherington had died in May of the year (1850) at age 19, just prior to the taking of the census.
An estate settlement in February of 1853 shows Lewis taking care of the estate of [his son] James W. Etherington. James would have been about 27 years old in that year, and appears to have been single.

Ethington, Hezikiah settled in twsp March 10, 1858, 3 personsBy the 1860 census, the family has moved to Nemaha County, in the North East corner of Kansas. At that time the census shows as follows:
Dwelling 239
Etherton, Lewis age 60 (born 1800) M Farmer VA
Cinderilla age 53 (born 1807) F born KY
Sally age 19 (born 1841) F born IL

Evington, Joseph age 22 (born 1838) M Farmer KY
Mary A. age 16 (born 1844) F ILDwelling 402/365 of Valley Township shows the following family:
Dennis, Batson age 65 (born 1795) M Farmer KY
May A. age 69 (born 1791) F VA
Ethington, Nancy J. age 9 (born 1851) F IL
While is it likely that the Joseph in dwelling 224 is the son of Lewis married to Mary Ann Faubian, it is not known exactly who the
Joseph in dwelling 237 is.The young girl Nancy J. Ethington living with the Dennis family in Valley township presents an interesting problem. Following is an e-mail received March 2004 from Mary Shoemaker:
"Good afternoon, I am Mary Shoemaker and am doing research on The Dennis family. I found a Nancy J. Ethington living with my gg/father Batson Dennis & wife Mary Ann Callender Dennis in the 1860 census. They lived in Valley twp. Nemaha County, Kansas. Nancy J. was listed as being 9 years old and born in Illinois at the time. Am trying to find the connection bet. my Dennis line and the Ethington line. Could you please help? Thanks much Mary"
The fact that May A. Dennis is actually a Callender, born in Virginia is interesting enough since Lewis Ethington's mother was Sarah Ann Callender born Virginia. In addition, we see the James Ethington of Trimble County KY was married to a Dolly Dennis at one time, and married a Mahala Callender after Dolly's death. This Nancy J. Ethington does not appear to be the same person as Nancy P. Ethington, daughter of Lewis and Cinderella and found in the 1850 census with that family. Nancy P. was born in 1847, while Nancy J. was born in 1851. So here we have an unknown 9 year old Ethington girl living with a Dennis family where Mrs. May Dennis was a Callender. Further study and work with Mary Shoemaker will be done.
Some problem is created by the presence of John, born 1838, in this family. In the 1850 census, a son John H. was shown as born in 1833. If John H. had died, and a later son born in 1838 was also named John, then the younger John would have also appeared in the 1840 census. Need further information to understand exactly who each John is. Until that time, both will be shown as sons of Lewis and Cinderella.
After this 1860 census, no further mention of the Lewis/Cindereall Ethington family is found. Neither the 1870 nor the 1880 census for Nemaha county shows them, and no death records or estate settlement has yet been found to document the deaths of these two people. Need further information to complete the family history.Harold D. Ethington

REPORT
6 Jul 1992Information received this day from Mildred Hogue Warden and her sister Florence Hogue Haines, grandaughters of Joseph H. Ethington indicates that Lewis Ethington died in Worth County Missouri. Check of that county reveals that a Lewis W. Ethington did die there in November 1875. Following is a bond executed by Joseph H. Ethington, administrator:
County of Worth, in the matter of Lewis W. Ethington estate.
Joseph H. Ethington says that to the best of his knowledge and belief, the name of the heirs of the said Lewis W. Ethington, deceased, and their places and residences are respectively as follows:name county state
David S. Ethington Jefferson Illinois
Hezikiah Ethington Washington Kansas
Joseph H. Ethington Nodoway Missouri
Nancy P. Walters Worth Missouri
Margaret and John Ethington -------- Kentucky
Lewis Young and Charles Young Nemahaw Kansas
Nancy Ethington Washington KansasThat the said Lewis W. Ethington died without a will, that he will make a perfect inventory of and faithfully administer all the estate of the deceased, and pay the debts as far as the assets will extend...

Note that there is no land or other real estate in Lewis's estate. Note also that there is $21 due "from Arkansas". This led to the 1870 Federal Census of Arkansas, where we find in Franklin County the following:
Census 1870 Arkansas Franklin County page 88 dw 138/148
Ethington, George age 27 White Male IL Farmer $700 $300
Mary 20 White Female KY
Margaret 3 White Female IL
Lewis 2 White Male IL
John 7/12 White Male ARK
Lewis 70 White Male VAFrom this we see that Lewis is living with his son, George in Franklin County.
This completes all census records taken during Lewis' lifetime. In the list of heirs for Lewis, issued at his death by his son Joseph H. Ethington, the names of Margaret and John Ethington, residents of Kentucky are noted. The name of George does not appear. First, it is probable that Margaret and John would be the son and daughter of George and Mary. Second, the question must be asked "Where are George, Mary, and their other son John? Why were they not listed as heirs, and why are these two young children now living in Kentucky, just 5 years after this census was taken. These questions will have to be pursued in order to understand George's family. There are many references to the settlement of Lewis' estate in the Worth County probate books, but not all of those books are available in Salt Lake. Need to look at each entry to see what happened to each heir.
Another item needing further inspection is the listing of Lewis Young and Charles Young as heirs. Need to find their mother and show the marriage to Young.

Letter from Sue Jones to Mildred Ritchie dated 22 Oct 1986 (in Lewis/Cinderella Ethington file):
"Lewis lived in Montgomery Township which is in the SE corner of Crawford County. He lived near the Crawford - Lawrence County line, and he bought virgin land. I find in the original land purchases:

385082 School lot 8 15 05N-11W 40.7 ac @ $2.15 $ 87.30"The only thing I don't understand about this family is if they're all born in Kentucky, as the 1850 census says, What is the family doing here in 1850? They must have come here in time for the 1840 census and then went back to Kentucky at least to 1847, when their youngest was born and then came back here by the 1850 census. Then, they're someplace for the 1860 census. Yet, George married here in 1865!

2. A child, Sarah Jane, age 20 (born 1830) is present. Family records show a daughter "Fannie" born about this time, but the names are not interchangeable. Will add Sarah Jane as daughter.
3. The lack of younger children may indicate that husband Elisha died up to 20 years before.
4. Son Zerubable Vest, now age 21, marries Christina Derringer (next door) in January of 1853, just three years hence. He would be 24 at that time, and Christina would be 17.

Census: 1860The family of Jonathan and Sarah Vest has no yet been found in the 1860 census. Note that (above) they sold land to Elijah Vest in 1857. Will put Nancy Vest death date at "before 1888". Will assume that Mary E., "sister-in-law', is sister to wife Louisa.
