The Callender family of Stafford County Virginia is closely tied to the Ethington family in the early Culpeper and Spotsylvania period.  This relationship continued through the early 1800's in Henry, Shelby, and Owen counties in Kentucky.  The two families interact through land transactions, court actions, guardianships, marriages and even migration patterns, but relationships were seldom stated.  The Ethington family has worked for years trying to document the Callender family, with little results.  The following reports detail these efforts.

1.  Callender Family report of 29 March 2001
Work by Bettie Cummings Cook, Certified Genealogist in Virginia and Kentucky records trying to
establish Callender / Ethington family relationships.  Comments by Harold Ethington. 22 pages.

2.  Mary Ann (Callender) Dennis (1780-1861)
James W. Ethington, grandson of William and Sarah Ann (Callender) Ethington died in 1853 leaving
an infant daughter named Nancy Jane Ethington.  Nancy Jane was taken in by Batson and Mary
Ann (Callender) Dennis who raised her to adulthood.  The interaction of these two Callender women
(Sarah Ann and Mary Ann) is indicative of a family relationship which if understood, would further
research on the Callender family.  This report focuses on Mary Ann's son Joseph Dennis, but helpful
    family details are included.

3.  Darnold & Calander vs. Edringtons
Henry Co KY lawsuit between Darnold and Callender families vs Edrington family over title to
land.  The Edrington family involved is not related to the William / Fielding Ethington families
of Henry County, but this suit does shed light on the Callender family in that county.

4.  Callender vs Ethington Henry County KY 1852
James Ethington, son of William and Sarah Ann (Callender) Ethington was appointed guardian for
Cinthiania, Phillip, Nancy, John W., Sarah Francis, and Morton Callender, orphan children of the
deceased John and Elizabeth Callender.  A dispute arose about rents collected, and this suit
was filed in 1852.  The chidren were born between 1824 and 1834.  Many facts about the Henry
county Ethingtons and Callenders, but no relationships given.

5.  Callender wittness in Henry County KY to 1836 Shelton Rev War pension
At the age of 86, Wilson Shelton filed for a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War.  His
application was supported by statements from Jeremiah and Joseph Callender in Henry County.
Military movements and involvement given by Shelton shed light on the Virginia homes of the
     two Callender men.

6.  Indenture by Abraham and Susannah Killander to Hawser, land in Shelby Co KY
Mortgage filed in 1816 by parents Abraham and Susannah Kilander in favor of their children
Mason, Jefferson, Elijah, John and James Wickliff.

7.  Phillip Callander Heirs deed to Parrish.  Owen Co KY 1836
Emily, Richard, and Matilda Callender, children of Philip Callendar mortgage land to Nelson Perrish
3 Feb 1836 in Owen County KY.

8.  Phillip and Louisa (Edrington) Callendar v Edrington family
Suit between Phillip and Louisa (Edrington) Callendar and Louisa's family in Henry County KY.
Suit filed in Henry Co 12 April 1864.  Louisa's parents are Samuel and Nancy Edrington.

9.  Callendar vs Eatherton Culpeper Virginia 1804
John Callendar contracts with John Eatherton to purchase land in Culpeper County.  Callendar
pays the full purchase price, but Eatherton cannot deliver title because the land was only leased
by his father William, now deceast.  Callendar waits until 1823 when he brings suit in Owen
County Kentucky, and the resulting paper stream reveals both the Virginia and the Kentucky
sides of the family in great detail. The most important document found so far in Ethington family
research.  Loaded in 2 parts (A and B) due to size.  Indexes references to pages 1-22 will be
found in Part A.  Pages 23 to end in Part B.  Photographs of descendants.  May take several
       minutes to load.
